The White House is responding to Uganda’s new anti-gay law, which is one of the strictest in the world.

Homosexual activity was already illegal in Uganda. But under the new law same-sex acts can be punished with life in prison.

The law also calls for the death penalty for People who engage in homosexual acts with a minor or spread HIV through gay activity.

The White House condemned the law, calling it a tragic violation of human rights.

President Biden said he’s evaluating U.S. engagement with Uganda. This includes nearly $1 billion in annual financial investments. He also warns that additional steps, like sanctions and entry restrictions may be on the table.

Even prominent conservatives like Texas Senator Ted Cruz are speaking out against the law, calling it “horrific and wrong.”

Uganda previously passed a similar law in 2014, but it was struck down by the constitutional court.
