Montana just banned drag queen story times after the governor signed a groundbreaking law.

Other states have attempted to ban these controversial reading events by defining them as performances that are sexual in nature. But this vague standard makes it difficult to enforce. Montana bypasses this by specifically prohibiting Drag Queens and Kings from reading books to minors.

The first-of-its-kind law prevents the story times at public schools and libraries. It also bars children from attending drag performances or sexually-oriented performances on public property.

The governor’s office stated, “it’s wildly inappropriate for little kids, especially preschoolers and kids in elementary school, to be exposed to sexualized content.”

The bill went into effect immediately.

But similar laws in Florida and Tennessee are held up by legal challenges. Transactivists say their constitutional rights are infringed by anti-drag laws.
