Surgeon General Vivek Murthy is now saying that social media use among teenagers can lead to harmful effects on their mental health.

He issued an advisory earlier this week. But he said parents aren’t entirely to blame. The Surgeon General is calling on tech companies to be more transparent about the harms of social media.

Meanwhile, he recommended limiting social media use at least 1 hour before bed and refraining from sharing too many personal details online.

He said children should also reach out for help if social media is harming their mental health.
