Three more New York counties are declaring states of emergency as New York City Mayor Eric Adams has been bussing illegal immigrants upstate.
Dutchess, Sullivan, and Greene Counties joined Orange and Rockland counties on Thursday in declaring a state of emergency.
“We do not have the physical rooms or supporting capacity to house an influx of asylum seekers,” Greene County officials said, according to the Hudson Valley Post.
Most rural counties like Greene are not equipped to handle an immigration influx. Transferring the responsibilities that NYC has as a Sanctuary City to rural upstate counties is wrong and amounts to human trafficking.
Likewise, Sullivan County officials said they are in the midst of a “severe housing crisis” and are unable to receive migrants.
Dutchess County declared the State of Emergency after news broke that New York City was going to bus migrants to a Red Roof Inn in Poughkeepsie, the Post reports.
Mayor Adams announced plans earlier this month to move forward with dumping migrants off to hotels in some smaller suburban counties around his jurisdiction. That same day, he announced that he would bus migrants to the nearby Rockland and Orange counties.
According to Adams, New York City has received over 70,000 migrants and over 40,000 are still in the city’s care, which he says could cost the city up to up to $4.3 billion.
Adams is trying to revoke New York’s sanctuary city status and suspend the city’s right-to-shelter law.
“Given that we’re unable to provide care for an unlimited number of people and are already overextended, it is in the best interest of everyone, including those seeking to come to the United States, to be upfront that New York City cannot single-handedly provide care to everyone crossing our border,” the mayor said.
