Congress advanced a bill yesterday that deters violence towards police officers from non-citizens.
The House passed the Protect our Law Enforcement with Immigration Control and Enforcement, or POLICE, Act yesterday. The bill makes removing foreign bad actors easier.
This includes refugees, illegal immigrants, and temporary visa holders.
Thirty-six Democrats and all Republicans voted to approve the POLICE Act, making for a 255-175 vote.
Congressman Andrew Garbarino, who introduced the act, says it’s a crystal clear message to non-citizens that commit violence towards police.
But the White House opposes the bill. The executive office says they are concerned the bill could “potentially sweep up even non-violent or unintentional conduct, resulting in deportation of even long term lawful permanent residents.”
The bill now goes to the Democrat-controlled Senate, where it faces an unlikely future.
