Nintendo and Illumination have created a smash hit with the Super Mario Bros. Movie as it just surpassed the $1 billion dollar mark in global box office revenue.
The movie has now become the 10th animated film in history to break this monetary milestone. In just the opening weekend alone, the movie raked in almost 205 million dollars in domestic box offices and 377 million dollars globally.
It marked the biggest opening for a video game adaptation and an animated movie. The film also gave Illumination its highest opening of all time, previously held by 2013’s “Despicable Me 2.”
And the movie continues to break records as it still stands at the number one spot for four consecutive weekends.
