Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.), chairman of the House Oversight Committee, has sent another round of subpoenas in hopes of uncovering evidence of financial wrongdoing by President Joe Biden or a member of his family.

House Democrats, specifically Oversight Committee Ranking Member Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), argue that Comer is operating in bad faith as well as relative secrecy.

Comer said he and fellow Republicans continue to find evidence of wrongdoing, however.

“@GOPoversight continues to find LLCs affiliated with the Biden family that were used to transfer large amounts of money from China to their pockets,” Comer tweeted Thursday. “Where is the outrage? Bank records don’t lie. Americans deserve answers on this wired money to Biden family members.”

Fox News reported that subpoenas were sent to Marvyn Yan, a former business associate of Hunter Bden, as well as Bank of America, Cathay Bank, JPMorgan Chase, and HSBC USA N.A. In all cases, the subpoenas were for bank records.

DEMOCRATS DENY CLAIMS

Raskin fired back with a letter accusing Comer and Republicans of either misrepresenting facts to the American public or withholding pertinent information from Democrats on the committee.

In short, Raskin alleges that Comer’s public statements about the committee’s work do not match the record.

“[Failure] to act transparently and candidly, and to provide the Minority with equal access to Committee information undermines your pledge to pursue ‘a credible investigation based on facts that is fair and balanced,’” Raskin wrote. “Indeed, your misrepresentations and refusal to disclose relevant information to the Committee call into serious question your investigative techniques, the ‘facts’ you have uncovered, and the narratives you appear intent on composing.”

The official Twitter account for Oversight Democrats expanded on Raskin’s accusations.

“@GOPOversight cannot break long-standing Committee practice to conduct a secret investigation while claiming the probe is legitimate,” a tweet in a longer thread reads. “There’s no Committee integrity without bipartisan access and transparency.

“Just this week, Chairman Comer claimed he was in contact with four ‘whistleblowers,’ seemingly misrepresenting the status of individuals from whom @GOPOversight sought information but who have NEVER reported any wrongdoing by the Biden family. No wrongdoing, no whistleblowing.”

COMER FIRES BACK

But Comer says Democrats on the committee, led by Raskin, have been underhanded in their actions, which Comer says includes sharing details about the most recent round of subpoenas with the press.

“@OversightDems have again disclosed Committee’s subpoenas in a cheap attempt to thwart cooperation from other witnesses,” Comer tweeted Friday. “No one should be fooled by Ranking Member Raskin’s games. We have the bank records, and the facts are not good for the Biden family.”

In a separate tweet, Comer accused Raskin of “playing lawyer for the Biden family instead of engaging in real oversight for the American people. When the facts don’t go the Biden family’s way, Democrats lodge baseless accusations.”

It is unclear if or when Comer and Republicans will schedule a hearing to address the substance of what, if anything, the new subpoenas uncover.

The Oversight Committee has been quite busy since Comer became chair. Beyond the probe into Biden and his family’s business dealings, Republicans are gearing up for a hearing on the nation’s withdrawal from Afghanistan.

That hearing is slated for April 19.
