Tennessee Republicans are taking steps to expel the three Democratic lawmakers for their role in the chaotic protest last week.

The trio of state representatives encouraged gun control advocates to pack the capitol building. Then, Representative Justin Jones and two others led chants through a megaphone from the house floor in violation of the rules.

The Republican-controlled house filed resolutions to remove the Democrats yesterday, saying they intentionally brought “disorder and dishonor to the House of Representatives.”

The House will vote on the resolution tomorrow.

Democrats are now seizing the opportunity to portray the Republicans as heartless in the face of tragedy. Jones said it was “morally insane” that his colleagues would move to expel him.

The White House Press Secretary also criticized state Republicans for their response. She then accused the GOP of promoting unsafe gun policies.

But the issue is really a widening gap in how to address gun violence. Republicans believe the answer lies in mental health advocacy and stronger school security measures.
