The State of Florida is taking steps to allow Governor Ron DeSantis to run for president while maintaining the governorship.

Last week, the Florida Senate filed a bill that would end the state’s “resign to run law,” which would force DeSantis to step down as governor to run for president.

If passed by the state legislature and signed by the governor, the law would take effect July 1, keeping with DeSantis’ timeline for announcing a campaign. The governor hinted at launching a campaign sometime after Florida’s legislative session ends on May 5.

“This is going to be the most productive legislative session [Florida] has had … So [that’s] what we’re going to be doing over these next few months [and] as we get beyond that, then we can decide from there,” DeSantis told Fox & Friends in February when asked about plans to run.

DeSantis has been more upfront about his anticipated presidential bid in recent weeks, telling journalist Piers Morgan he believes could defeat President Joe Biden in a general election.

“I think what it takes is to have a vision for the country, have the ability to exercise leadership and being willing to stand in that fire when it gets really hot and not back down under pressure … and I think I have all those things,” he said.

When Morgan asked directly whether he plans to run in 2024 DeSantis said “stay tuned.”
