A group of criminals defaced a French Catholic Church with pro-satanic slogans and graffiti, according to a recent report from the Catholic News Agency (CNA).
The vandals perpetrated the crime at Sacred Heart Church in Bordeaux, France, in the late night hours of March 12 into the early morning of March 13. The archdiocese to which the church belongs issued a response, saying,
On the night of March 12-13, the door and some of the walls of the façade of the Church of the Sacred Heart were defaced with graffiti. A trash fire in front of the church was extinguished by firefighters called to the scene. This fire did not damage the church.
According to reports, the vandals wrote hateful slogans on the 19th-century church, including “Lucifer is right,” “The neighbors hate the Church,” “Devil, take me with you,” and “Thank you Satan”
Reports indicate that an investigation has been opened, but as of Wednesday, it is unknown if any suspects have been arrested.
Author’s Biblical Analysis
There is much for Christians to consider in this report. Certainly, we see another example of Christian persecution and the need for true believers to stand fast under pressure.
The trend is obvious: France, which was once a bastion of Christendom for the better part of 1,500 years, is now overridden by a secular worldview that hates the Christian faith. Christians need not be surprised to see our beliefs pushed to the margins. Hatred was promised by our Lord Himself (John 15); let us therefore hold fast to the truth in spite of it.
In this report, we also can also see several powerful lessons hidden in the messaging of the vandals. How sad it is that they have been so utterly fooled to plead with the Prince of Darkness, the great enemy of their soul, to “take them with him.” The implications of this are obvious: they would prefer a false promise of “freedom” that actually leads to eternal perdition in hell over slavery to Christ, the only reality that leads to true, eternal freedom.
The devil, who knows his fate is sealed, is trying vehemently to snatch as many sinners as he possibly can join him in his eternal destruction in the lake of fire. Christians must not stand for it, and we must share the gospel with everyone we meet, knowing it is their only hope for salvation.
In all of this, I believe we must be reminded of a vital truth from this report. That truth is wrapped up in the perpetrators’ claim that “Lucifer is right.” I want to shout for the mountaintops for all to hear: No, he is not! The victory belongs to the Lord, and therefore to us also.
Lucifer’s fatal flaw in his rebellion in heaven before the fall of man was that he falsely believed he was greater than God. He believed he could be a match for God, and he was woefully mistaken. Friends, there is not a soul in this universe who can even compare with the greatness of God.
Lucifer was wrong. Lucifer is wrong today. Lucifer will be wrong for all of eternity. And most importantly, he has already lost the battle to defeat God.
Lucifer never had a chance to win the fight. He failed to snatch the people of God out of God’s hand in the Old Testament. He failed to cause our Lord to stumble in the wilderness (Matthew 4). He failed to thwart the plan of salvation, culminating in the vicarious death of Jesus Christ on the cross. And most of all, he failed to keep the Son of God dead.
When Jesus rose from the dead, He crushed the head of the serpent (Genesis 3:15).
Since all this is true, the victory of God over the enemy belongs to us also! This is the greatest news redeemed sinners could ever hear. Because of your victorious, conquering, serpent-crushing King, eternal victory is yours also, if you simply repent and believe in His name for salvation.
Thus says the Lord to you: ‘Do not be afraid nor dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours, but God’s. – 2 Chronicles 20:15
