Republican lawmakers continue to call a potential Trump indictment “politically motivated” and an “abuse of power” as a likely grand jury vote is expected this week or next.

Republican leaders like Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy (Calif.), Sen. Rick Scott (Fla.), Rep. Elise Stefanik (N.Y.), and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) have all spoken up in defense of Trump. Even Republicans who are rumored to be running against him for president like Gov. Ron DeSantis (Fla.), Mike Pence (Ind.), and Vivek Ramaswamy have spoken against the potential indictment, calling it a politically-motivated stunt.

JUDICIARY COMMITTEE DEMANDS TESTIMONY

In addition to the public support, the Republican-led House Judiciary Committee is demanding that Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg, a Democrat, testify before Congress as he considers the indictment. The charges are related to the payments made to porn actress Stormy Daniels in 2016. Similar charges were dropped by federal prosecutors in 2019 and again by the Federal Election Committee in 2021.

Yesterday, a letter was sent to Bragg from House Judiciary Chairman Elise Stefanik (R-Ohio), House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.), and House Administration Committee Chairman Bryan Steil (R-Wis.) that, according to a press release, demanded “communications, documents, and testimony relating to Bragg’s unprecedented abuse of prosecutorial authority and the potential indictment of former President Donald Trump.”

The letter to Bragg reads, in part:

This indictment comes after years of your office searching for a basis — any basis — on which to bring charges, ultimately settling on a novel legal theory untested anywhere in the country and one that federal authorities declined to pursue. If these reports are accurate, your actions will erode confidence in the evenhanded application of justice and unalterably interfere in the course of the 2024 presidential election. In light of the serious consequences of your actions, we expect that you will testify about what plainly appears to be a politically motivated prosecutorial decision.

DESANTIS CALLS OUT ‘SOROS-BACKED PROSECUTOR’

Over the past few weeks, Trump has been vocal in his attacks against Gov. Ron DeSantis. DeSantis, for the most part, has remained silent in the face of those attacks while touting his work in Florida and going on a book tour for his new work “The Courage to Be Free.”

DeSantis broke that silence yesterday.

“I’ve seen rumors swirl. I have not seen any facts yet, and so I don’t know what’s going to happen,” DeSantis said when asked about the possible charges during a news conference.

But I do know this: The Manhattan district attorney is a Soros-funded prosecutor and so he, like other Soros-funded prosecutors, they weaponize their office to impose a political agenda on society at the expense of the rule of law and public safety.

DeSantis was also asked if he planned on getting involved because of Trump’s ties to Florida.

“I have no interest in getting involved in some type of manufactured circus by some Soros DA. He’s trying to do a political spectacle … I’ve got real issues I’ve got to deal with here in the state of Florida. We’re not getting involved in it in any way,” DeSantis replied.

DESANTIS TRADES JABS WITH TRUMP

DeSantis did get one dig in on Trump during the press conference without actually mentioning Trump by name.

“I don’t know what goes into paying hush money to a porn star to secure silence over some type of alleged affair,” DeSantis said.

According to The Hill, Trump answered DeSantis’ press conference with a now-deleted post on Truth Social that read, “Ron DeSanctimonious will probably find out about FALSE ACCUSATIONS & FAKE STORIES sometime in the future, as he gets older, wiser, and better known, when he’s unfairly and illegally attacked by a woman, even classmates that are ‘underage’ (or possibly a man!). I’m sure he will want to fight these misfits just like I do!”
