Those of you living in Florida may want to be on the lookout for a massive collection of seaweed heading your way.
This huge seaweed blob usually floats out in between the Gulf of Mexico and the shores of West Africa. However, ocean currents are pushing the blob further west than usual causing some of it to wash up on the shores of the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico.
While it is generally harmless in the middle of the ocean, it can cause damage to local ecosystems, along with the quality of air and water when it comes ashore.
Not to mention the fact that it isn’t all too pleasing to look and could damage tourism.
Scientists have also noted that this particular seaweed buildup is one of the largest on record spanning roughly 5,000 miles – or almost twice the width of the United States.
