The start-up that created the artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot which took the internet by storm is providing an upgrade to its AI services.
According to OpenAI, the company which creates the GPT line of AI, the latest release of GPT-4 marks the “most advanced system” to date. The company says GPT-4 will provide “safer and more useful responses” than their previous products.
“GPT-4 is more creative and collaborative than ever before,” the company writes. “It can generate, edit, and iterate with users on creative and technical writing tasks, such as composing songs, writing screenplays, or learning a user’s writing style.”
The AI “is capable of handling over 25,000 words of text, allowing for use cases like long form content creation, extended conversations, and document search and analysis.”
GPT-4 can also “accept images as inputs and generate captions, classifications, and analyses.”
OpenAI said it spent 6 months in making a “safer and more aligned” version of GPT. For clarification, this means that GPT-4 “is 82% less likely to respond to requests for disallowed content and 40% more likely to produce factual responses than GPT-3.5 on our internal evaluations.”
While “disallowed content” is not explicitly defined, it is likely this is a reference to users breaking AI guardrails to grant advice on dangerous activities or to write threats to other users.
OpenAI said that it has entered into partnerships with many different companies and groups to offer GPT-4 through various services. These entities include Duolingo, Morgan Stanley, and even the government of Iceland, to name a few.
While the improvements are impressive, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman tweeted that the company is aware of the fact that it is “still flawed” and “still limited.”
Altman still talked about how “impressive” the system is compared to its previous models. Research done by OpenAI showed GPT-4 performing moderately well in a number of tests designed for humans, including exams such as the Uniform Bar and the SATs.
Still, with the improvement of such AI comes the concern that bad actors could use this technology for more nefarious purposes.
GPT-4 is available now on ChatGPT Plus or through an API waitlist.
