Proposed legislation to ban biological males from competing in women’s sports will be taken up in the House for the first time Wednesday, according to an announcement by the House Committee on Education and the Workforce.
The “Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act,” introduced by Rep. Greg Steube (R-Fla.), would amend Title IX — the federal civil rights law that prohibits sex-based discrimination in schools — to recognize sex as “based solely on a person’s reproductive biology and genetics at birth.”
The bill also would bar schools that receive federal funding “to permit a person whose sex is male to participate in an athletic program or activity that is designated for women or girls.”
“By allowing biological males onto women’s teams & into women’s locker rooms, the woke Left is working to wipe away women’s sports,” Stuebe tweeted on Saturday. “The best way to counter Biden’s dangerous rewrite of Title IX is to pass the Protection of Women & Girls in Sports Act.”
Wednesday will be the third time Stuebe has introduced the bill, which was struck down by the last two Democrat-controlled Congresses.
The committee is also taking up the “Parents Bill of Rights Act” on Wednesday. Both pieces of legislation enjoy the support of House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.).
“By putting forth legislative measures that create a Parents Bill of Rights and protect women’s sports, Republicans are making good on our promise to establish a future that is built on freedom, where a child’s academics are put first and parents have a say in their children’s curriculum,” Education and the Workforce Committee Chairwoman Virginia Foxx (R-NC) said in a press release.
