The FBI in recent weeks conducted two searches of President Joe Biden’s alma mater, the University of Delaware, in search of classified documents from the president’s time serving as a senator of Delaware.
The searches make the fourth time the FBI has searched for sensitive documents pertaining to Biden’s former time in office, either as a vice president or senator.
Biden’s homes in Rehoboth Beach and Wilmington, both in Delaware, and his office at the Penn Biden Center have undergone searches in recent months and turned up classified documents at the Wilmington home. Additionally, sensitive documents were found and reported by Biden’s lawyers at the Penn Biden Center in Washington D.C.
According to CBS News, “in November, one of Biden’s personal attorneys, Patrick Moore, discovered roughly 10 documents with sensitive markings at the Penn Biden Center in Washington, D.C. Some were marked top secret.”
President Biden donated his Senate records to the University of Delaware in 2011 with the stipulation that they be sealed now and for a period of two years after his retirement. Over 1,800 boxes of information and “extensive electronic records” were donated, according to the university’s website, from the years 1973 to 2009.
The university is refusing to comment on the search, as is the Department of Justice.
The FBI took several items from the university and, although classified markings weren’t immediately apparent, the agency is currently analyzing the material.
The Daily Mail reported that a partner of the president’s son, Eric Schwerin, “was in charge of moving [the] massive archive of files from the then-vice president’s D.C. office … to the University of Delaware.”
The Biden document search comes after former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home in Florida was raided in August 2022 in search of classified documents as well as a search last week of former Vice President Mike Pence’s home. Pence’s attorneys had previously reported finding “a small number” of classified documents, according to the Associated Press.
Sen. Ted Cruz in January called for all the donated Biden Senate documents to be examined.
“I am right now calling for the Department of Justice, for the FBI to examine all 1,850 boxes of those Senate records to see how many additional classified documents are in those records,” Cruz said, the New York Post reported. “The answer should be none. But given Biden’s pattern, we should have zero confidence that there are not multiple classified documents within those 1,850 boxes of Senate records.”
