An anonymous mother has expressed regret for allowing her four-year-old son to “transition” genders, according to a Daily Mail report from earlier this week.
The Daily Mail reports that the mother had encouraged her son to transition when the child started expressing a desire to be a girl when he was only three years old.
The mother said,
I am no longer a true believer. This experience for me has felt like leaving a cult, a cult that would have me sacrifice my child to the gods of gender ideology, in the name of social justice and collective liberation. I have left this cult, and I am never turning back.
This woman was previously something of a transgender ambassador who would encourage “the concept of intersectionality to progressive organizations, and having people share their pronouns.” But after watching her son go through a medical process that is very often irreversible and can leave irreparable damage to the patient, the mother changed her opinion.
This all comes as part of a nationwide push from many political elites to codify the teaching of LGBTQ worldview principles in the classroom, even down the preschool and earlier.
Author’s Biblical Analysis
This report is heartbreaking on several different levels.
First, our hearts should break for the poor child, who did not know his right hand from his left. Children simply cannot make these types of life-altering decisions. This child, with a mind not yet fully developed, was solicited by adults around him to make a life-altering decision, one that very often comes with irreversible consequences.
But also, we should have compassion for the mother. Clearly, she erred, but it seems as though she is aware of her infraction. Most importantly, she feels deep regret for what she has done and has turned from the sin of leading her sons into gender confusion.
The lesson for all of us is a word of spiritual encouragement that I wish I could give to this poor woman. If she were listening to me, I would tell her this: Turn to Christ, where sinners can find true forgiveness.
This woman has gotten to a place that I would argue could be the best place for a sinner to be, where she feels legitimate regret for what she has done. Many of us never even get to this place, but this is the first step toward true repentance.
I would pray for this woman, that she would move from a place of realizing her guilt to asking for forgiveness from those she has wronged. This begins with God.
All sin is a sin against God (Psalm 51:4), so God would be the first party from which to ask forgiveness. The second is her child.
Though we are all accountable for our actions, I believe that young children are “innocent” in the sense that they do not understand right from wrong. At some age, they begin to understand those things. But in this situation, it appears the child was simply acting upon childish imaginations (for example, when I was a young boy I did not wish I was a girl, but I did wish I was a professional athlete or an animal that can fly) at the encouragement of his parent.
It would do us well to pray for this poor woman, who has come to a right understanding of her sin. Now, may she come to know the forgiveness and freedom that Jesus Christ offers.
May this be said of all of us. When we sin, it should sicken us. May it also drive us to our knees in repentance, and may we enter confidently into the throne room of God, knowing He forgives us of every sin.
Have mercy upon me, O God, according to Your lovingkindness; according to the multitude of Your tender mercies, blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. – Psalm 51:1-2
