Wednesday brought authorities no closer to getting an escaped murderer and bomb builder off the street.

Porfirio Duarte-Herrera — a 42-year-old illegal immigrant from Nicaragua who had been serving a life sentence for having rigged a motion-sensored bomb that killed a hotdog vendor in Las Vegas 15 years ago — has come into the national consciousness over the past 48 hours, but Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak revealed that the convict escaped much earlier than that.

According to a report from the Associated Press, guards didn’t notice Duarte-Herrera’s absence until Tuesday, but that Duarte-Herraro had escaped potentially as early as Friday. Authorities did not give any indication of where they think Duarte-Herrara might be hiding or heading.

“This morning, my office was informed by the Nevada Department of Corrections that an inmate was reported as missing,” Sisolak said in a Tuesday statement. “My office later learned that upon further investigation by NDOC the inmate has been missing since early in the weekend. This is unacceptable.

“My Office has ordered NDOC to conduct and complete a thorough investigation into this event as quickly as possible. This kind of security lapse cannot be permitted and those responsible will be held accountable.”

Fox 5 Las Vegas reported Wednesday that U.S. Marshals had offered a $5,000 reward for Duarte-Herrera’s capture. That amount jumped to $30,000 late Wednesday.

Duarte-Herrera had, in addition to having been convicted in the death of the vendor, was found guilty of destroying a parked truck with a bomb, a crime that carried with it convictions on the grounds of attempted murder, bomb-making, bomb possession, and destruction of property.

“State, local and federal law enforcement officials are all engaged in the search for Porfirio Duarte-Herrera,” Sisolak tweeted Wednesday. “Anyone with information about his whereabouts should call 911. The State is actively investigating the circumstances around his escape.”

Duarte-Herrera stands 5-foot-4 and weighs 135 pounds, authorities say. He was initially convicted alongside an accomplice, Omar Rueda-Denvers formerly of Guatemala.

Rueda-Denvers remains safely behind bars.
