Who needs a guard dog when you have a … guard cat?

In the wee hours of July 25, Fred Everitt of Belden, Mississippi knew something was wrong. Everitt’s kitty Bandit woke her master out of a sound sleep by pulling off his blanket and clawing his arm. The fast-acting feline may have saved his life.

“I grew alarmed because the cat had never done that before,” the retired oral and maxillofacial surgeon told the Daily Journal. “I went, ‘What in the world is wrong with you?’” That perfectly logical question is often posed to these peculiar pets.

According to the Daily Journal, Everitt left his bedroom to figure out what Bandit wanted and turned on the lights in his kitchen. That was when he saw two men outside his home attempting to open a back door – one armed with a handgun and one trying to pry Everitt’s door open with a crowbar.

Startled by the homeowner, the trespassers fled.

“It did not turn into a confrontational situation, thank goodness, but it’s only because of the cat,” Everitt told Fox News.

Will Bandit now become a “watch cat”? Unlikely. The training, commitment, and hard work necessary to do the job are all probably too much for a species famous for its aloof indifference to pretty much everything. Besides, Fred Everitt’s pouncing protector certainly does not have the physique of your average superhero, as this tubby tabby tips the scales at a plump 20 lbs!

Regardless of what the future holds for Bandit, the fact that this former shelter cat possibly saved the life of the man who quite possibly saved hers, is a wonderful reward for them both.
