Florida Governor Ron DeSantis told attendees at the Sunshine Summit’s Victory Dinner on Saturday to “put on the full armor of God” when facing down the political left.
“You got to be ready for battle. So put on the full armor of God,” DeSantis said, referencing Ephesians 6. “Take a stand against the left’s schemes. Stand firm with the belt of truth buckled around your waist. You will face fire from flaming arrows, but the shield of faith will protect you.”
DeSantis made these comments in the context of having the courage to speak the truth, without the fear of consequences.
“In times like these, it’s not enough to just be right on the issues,” he said earlier in the speech. “Because in times like these, there’s no substitute for courage. You got to have the courage of your convictions to be willing to stand up against the media. You got to have the courage to stand up against things like cancel culture. You got to have the courage to stand up to the woke mob. You got to have the courage to stand in the way of the Brandon administration.”
Last month, DeSantis, who is Catholic, made similar comments during a speech at Faith and Freedom Coalition’s “Road to Majority” conference.
“You got to be strong. You got to put on the full armor of God. You got to take a stand, take a stand against the left’s schemes,” DeSantis said in June. “You got to stand your ground. You got to be firm. You will face flaming arrows but take up the shield of faith and fight on.”
The passage DeSantis is referring to is Ephesians 6:14-17, in which the Apostle Paul writes:
14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. . .
While DeSantis used the passage to promote standing firm against political opposition, it should be noted that this passage was written in the context of opposing spiritual opposition.
Paul makes this clear in verse 12, writing: “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.”
