In the midst of the horrific tragedy of the July 4th Chicago shooting, generous strangers are coming to the aid of a little boy who lost both his parents in the massacre.
Two-year-old Aidan McCarthy was tragically orphaned on July 4th, as both his parents, Kevin and Irina McCarthy, were murdered by a gunman at the Independence Day observance in Chicago on Monday. Providentially, Aiden was found unharmed by another couple who took him to a local hospital where he was united with his grandparents.
Not long after, a woman named Irina Colon set up a GoFundMe fundraiser for the young boy, where generous donors could give money to help him in the aftermath of such a horrific loss. Currently, supporters have raised over $2 million in an act of mass generosity for this young boy.
The page reads, in part, “At two years old, Aiden is left in the unthinkable position; to grow up without his parents. Aiden will be cared for by his loving family, and he will have a long road ahead to heal, find stability, and ultimately navigate life as an orphan. He is surrounded by a community of friends and extended family that will embrace him with love, and any means available to ensure he has everything he needs as he grows. On behalf of his family, and with their permission, I am establishing this fundraiser to support him and the caregivers who will be tasked with raising, caring for, and supporting Aiden as he and his support system embark on this unexpected journey.”
In the midst of such horror, this report gives clear testimony to the goodness and love of God, shown through these kind strangers to this precious boy. The words of Psalm 34:18 ring true: “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.”
