For over 1100 years throughout the medieval period, the Eastern Roman Empire survived under the original name of its capital city: the Byzantine Empire. The empire started strong, but it quickly became sandwiched between two dominant forces: Latin Christendom in the West and a rapidly rising Islamic contingent to the East.
