Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer has unintentionally found himself at the front of sports media headlines for all the wrong reasons. The former college head coach is in the first year of his contract in the NFL, and his team has yet to win a game. But it’s not just his failures on the field putting him in the limelight, Meyer also made headlines off the field last weekend due to a severe lapse in moral judgement following Jacksonville’s loss to the Cincinnati Bengals on Thursday night.

Meyer did not fly home with the team after the loss. Instead, he traveled to nearby Columbus to visit family. While he was there, he was eating dinner at his family-owned restaurant and bar, Urban Meyer’s Pint-House. The party reportedly became rowdy, and someone present posted a video of a 19-year-old woman dancing provocatively with Meyer, who is married with children and grandchildren. On Saturday, the video soon went viral, and it was followed by a second video of Meyer inappropriately touching the same woman

Jaguars’ owner Shad Khan released a statement early in the week affirming that the team will not fire Meyer for this, but that his conduct was “inexcusable.”

I have addressed this matter with Urban. Specifics of our conversation will be held in confidence. What I will say is his conduct last weekend was inexcusable. I appreciate Urban’s remorse, which I believe is sincere. Now, he must regain our trust and respect. That will require a personal commitment from Urban to everyone who supports, represents or plays for our team. I am confident he will deliver.

Meyer reportedly apologized to his team on Monday, but as he has claimed to be a born-again Christian in the past, his testimony has been damaged as well. Thankfully, God is a forgiving God, but this act of public infidelity is, to quote Khan, inexcusable. Hopefully Meyer will also come to repentance as he sits it a high position of mentoring young men as a professional football coach.
