Recently the Intercept filed a Freedom of Information Act request and uncovered 900 pages of documentation relating to the U.S. funding of coronavirus research in China.
The news outlet found that the National Institute of Health granted an organization known as EcoHealth Alliance $3.1 million to study bat coronaviruses. According to the Intercept, the grant included just under $600,000 used by the Wuhan Institute of Virology to “alter bat coronaviruses likely to infect humans.”
The revelation appears to give further credence to Senator Rand Paul’s assertion that Dr. Anthony Fauci lied when he said the NIH never funded gain of function research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology. In fact Dr. Richard Ebright, a microbiologist at Rutgers University whose expertise was used in the Intercept piece on the documents, said on Twitter that Fauci was being “untruthful.”
The documents make it clear that assertions by the NIH Director, Francis Collins, and the NIAID Director, Anthony Fauci, that the NIH did not support gain-of-function research or potential pandemic pathogen enhancement at WIV are untruthful.

In July, Paul sent a criminal referral letter to the Justice Department to have Fauci charged for lying to Congress. In the letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland, Paul wrote, “I write to urge the United States Department of Justice to open an investigation into testimony made to the United States Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions by Dr. Anthony Fauci, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, on May 11, 2021.”
Republicans are increasingly calling for Fauci to be fired over his role in funding the Wuhan lab, with some calling for investigations as well. Last month a Rasmuessen poll showed that only 44% of Americans have a favorable opinion of Fauci.
