The Baseball Hall of Fame class of 2020 was enshrined Wednesday after ceremonies were postponed last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns.
The newest class to be enshrined in Cooperstown is headlined by former New York Yankee Derek Jeter. Jeter was nearly a unanimous selection in his first year of eligibility, securing 99.7% of the votes. He grew up a Yankee fan and dreamed of playing shortstop for his beloved team. His dream was fulfilled when he was drafted by the Yankees in 1992 and called up to big leagues in 1995. For the next 20 years, “The Captain” was the standard of excellence, not only at the shortstop position, but also for what it means to be a true baseball player.
He was known for his hard work and excellence on the field and is considered one of the greatest shortstops of all time. More than that, he is considered one of the greatest Yankees of all time, no small feat when the likes of Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, and Reggie Jackson all played for Yankees. Throughout his career he racked up multiple awards including Rookie of the Year, 5 Gold Glove Awards, 5 Silver Slugger Awards, and 5 World Series Rings.
In addition, he collected 3,465 hits in the regular season and played in a whopping 158 postseason games. A regular season in baseball is 162 games, so to consider Jeter played nearly a full season’s worth of playoff games in his career is astounding. In those games, he had a glistening .308 lifetime batting average.
The class of 2020 also includes Marvin Miller, Ted Simmons and Larry Walker.
