According to CDC vaccination data, the U.S. has administered at least one dose of vaccine to more than 70% of citizens over the age of 18. President Joe Biden made it a goal to deliver at least one shot to 70% of U.S. adults, although this accomplishment came one month after his original July 4th target date.
In a recent press conference, Biden acknowledged the goal while continuing to press for more vaccinations from those who had not yet received one.
Think of it this way: A hundred and ninety-one million Americans have gotten at least one shot, including 70 percent of adults over the age of 18. A hundred and sixty-five million Americans are fully vaccinated, but about ninety million Americans are eligible for vaccines and still haven’t gotten their first shot.
The Biden administration has been heavily pushing vaccinations as more cases, including those caused by the Delta variant, surface within the nation. Biden himself has now been referring to the spike in cases as a “pandemic of the unvaccinated” and had previously said those who are not yet vaccinated are “not nearly as smart as [he] thought [they] were.”
Biden also recently announced that the federal government is requiring employees to show proof of vaccination, or be subject to constant testing. Similar requirements were announced in California and New York, as well as some private businesses.
During this same press conference, however, Biden also made a point to try and shame states that have refused to mandate and even outright banned vaccination and masking requirements in some areas. Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida had only days ago passed an executive order giving parents the choice to mask their child or not to do so instead of requiring masking throughout the State.
CDC data reported almost 79,000 new cases in the U.S. as of August 2. Governments continue to show concern over new variations of the COVID-19 virus, such as the Lambda and Delta Plus variants. However, both variations are still early in their emergence and little data is known for either one.
