In a year where far too many high-profile athletes are finding themselves in legal trouble, another big name has been added to the list. San Francisco 49ers veteran cornerback Richard Sherman was arrested Wednesday and is under investigation for domestic violence, according to ESPN. He is being held at King County Correctional Facility in Seattle, Washington, while the investigation continues. According to several sources, he was detained after trying to break into the home of some family members.
This is a sour look for the NFL, which is still in the middle of the sexual abuse charges against Houston Texans starting quarterback DeShaun Watson. Sherman, a 10-year veteran of the league, Super Bowl champion, and five-time Pro-Bowler, currently serves as Vice President of the NFL Players Association’s executive committee.

Sherman is a free agent this offseason. At this point, it is certainly possible that this situation could negatively affect the career of one of the best cornerbacks in the last decade. Sherman spent his first seven seasons with the Seattle Seahawks, where he won a Super Bowl and established himself as one of the best shutdown corners in the game as part of the feared “Legion of Boom” defense in Seattle. He has spent the last three seasons with the Seahawks’ division rival San Francisco 49ers, playing a big part in the 49ers’ 2019 Super Bowl run.
Now in the twilight of his career, it could be hard for many teams to see the value in a 33-year-old corner who has now gotten in trouble with the law.
