As border crossings continue and migrant children remain detained in overpacked facilities, the situation at the southern border becomes more and more critical. The Biden administration recently allowed journalists access to these facilities, and the images that have surfaced show the dangerous conditions for these families.

To help ease some of the situation, teachers from the San Diego Unified School District volunteered to go teach the unaccompanied children staying at the San Diego Convention Center. However, one San Diego County Office of Education spokesperson is up in arms since their own children haven’t received in-person schooling from the district as of yet.

In a statement to Fox News, this spokesperson describes the program that the teachers are are a part of:

The educational program will include English language development and social-emotional learning opportunities. The teachers who are participating in the program are doing so voluntarily, and the program is following a COVID-19 screening protocol based on guidelines from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

California Representative Darrell Issa commented on the matter, saying “The decision to provide in-person instruction to illegal migrants is outrageous and parents have every right to be angry.”

Emily Diaz, one SDUSD parent, asked an important question: “why are taxpaying students put last?” San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond shared this grief.

We have 130,000 kids who haven’t been allowed in a classroom for over a year in the San Diego Unified School District. It’s great that there’s in-person learning for those unaccompanied minors from Central America, but I wish every child in San Diego County was allowed the same opportunity for in-person teaching.

The San Diego Unified website announced that they will reopen their schools on April 12 for a combo of in-person and online learning for those who wish to be a part of ithe program.
