Following calls for gun bans from President Biden over the weekend, White House Press Secretary Jenn Psaki said that gun control is “a priority” to the President “on a personal level.”
When asked about specific plans to enact policy, Psaki responded saying, “I don’t have a prediction for you, or a preview for you on a timeline of a package, and certainly not what it will look like and how it goes through Congress.” She was also asked if Biden would use executive orders to put in place his gun policy, to which Psaki replied, “The president has a range of actions at his disposal . . .He hasn’t ruled out either of those options.”

The remarks came after Biden asked Congress to “enact commonsense gun laws” over the weekend. One of these “commonsense” laws would be a ban on “assault weapons,” a term that has failed to be adequately defined. He also requested Congress hold gun manufacturers legally liable for gun crimes when they “knowingly put weapons of war on our streets,” a phrase that likewise isn’t clear in its specifics.
Today, I am calling on Congress to enact commonsense gun law reforms, including requiring background checks on all gun sales, banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, and eliminating immunity for gun manufacturers who knowingly put weapons of war on our streets.
The National Rifle Association is asking gun owners to oppose and speak out against any crackdowns on gun rights from the Biden administration. An NRA blogpost recently said, “It will be up to these millions of law-abiding gun owners, and millions of NRA members, to make their voices heard in opposition to any infringement upon their constitutional rights.”
The organization noted that Biden’s plans to suppress Second Amendment rights come “at a time when Americans are exercising their Second Amendment rights in absolutely astonishing numbers.” Adding that last month “more than two million background checks [were] conducted for the purchase of a firearms.”
