A former border chief says that Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has severely underestimated the number of gotaways at the southern border.

For context, that term is used for somebody who enters the country illegally but then evades capture. That’s a national security risk since there’s no way of verifying who crossed over, criminal records, or even terrorist group ties.

Sen. Roger Marshall (R-Kan.) pressed Mayorkas on Tuesday about the number of gotaways during the fiscal year 2023, which recently ended. Mayorkas testified that the number was likely around 600,000.

But former Customs and Border Protection Chief Mark Morgan estimates that number is closer to 1 million. The former chief adds that there have been over 2 million gotaways just since President Biden first took office.

He told Center Square that, “It’s not if and when the threat arrives in our homeland. It’s already here.”
