Last night, after a heckler accused him of calling for a ceasefire, President Joe Biden called instead for a pause in the Israel-Hamas war.

In response to the heckler, Biden said, “I think we need a pause. A pause means give time to get the prisoners out.” Biden went on to say he had previously convinced Israel to stop firing on Gaza long enough for Hamas to release some hostages.

Biden was not technically calling for a ceasefire, which the White House has repeatedly rejected calls for, saying it would harm Israel’s ability to stave off Hamas. The Biden administration previously said it supports a “humanitarian pause” to allow aid deliveries to Gaza and the release of hostages.

However, some Republicans argue a pause would have the same effect as a ceasefire and accuse Biden of trying to appease the anti-Israel wing of the Democratic Party.
