For the first time, the US military on Thursday shot down an aircraft belonging to NATO ally Turkey.

The Pentagon said the US shot down a Turkish drone conducting airstrikes in Syria after it got too close to a US-restricted zone. Pentagon Press Secretary Patrick Ryder explained what happened, describing the shootdown as a “regrettable incident.”

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has since spoken with his Turkish counterpart about the incident. The U.S. currently has about 900 troops stationed in Syria with the goal of defeating ISIS.
