Reactions to the Hamas attack on Israel, something Daily Wire Editor Emeritus Ben Shapiro labeled the “worst day for Jews since the Holocaust,” have been steadily pouring in over the last few days.
Multiple world governments came together to “express … steadfast and united support to the State of Israel, and … unequivocal condemnation of Hamas and its appalling acts of terrorism.” This joint statement was issued by the leaders of France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
U.S. officials have had their own individual reactions. Former Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, as well as the George W. Bush Institute, all issued statements on X echoing similar sentiments to that of the joint statement.
Former President Donald Trump touched on the subject during a speech in New Hampshire on Monday. Although he did not talk about the war extensively, he used the opportunity to remind voters of his time as president, during which he took action against Iran as well as “radical Islamic terrorists.”
However, not all U.S. politicians have expressed the same message of unification in support of the nation of Israel. Specifically, “Squad” members Rashida Tlaib and Cori Bush have been substantially more forgiving of Hamas.
Following the attacks, Tlaib issued a statement in which she said that she grieved the loss of life on both sides but wanted to dismantle what she called “the apartheid system [in Israel] that creates the suffocating, dehumanizing conditions that can lead to resistance.”
Bush’s statement echoed these thoughts, calling for the US to end “government support for” Israel.
Some Squad members have previously issued critiques and even anti-Semitic remarks against Israel, each time to varying degrees of rebuke. This time, Bush and Tlaib’s statements were met with swift pushback from their own party.
Democrat Congressmen Ritchie Torres of New York and Josh Gottenheimer of New Jersey, both of whom represent areas heavily in favor of Israel, condemned these statements, saying they were shameful and sickening.
Republicans have also taken aim against these two for their comments. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) perhaps had the most visceral reaction as he called the pair a disgrace to the nation.
The Biden administration’s former special envoy to Iran, Rob Malley, is also being targeted for his work before being put on leave.
Former State Department special adviser on Iran Gabriel Noronha said that Malley was too “permissive” with Iran and Hamas during his tenure. Malley is also accused of being aware of a possible attack like what we saw over the weekend, though that is currently under investigation.
Elsewhere in the world, China came out to condemn Hamas while Russia warned that U.S. involvement runs the risk of adding a third nation to the conflict.
