The House Speaker contest became even more unprecedented after Israel’s war declaration.

While the president can use $3.3 billion in already appropriated financing, the chaos in the House limits future support for key U.S. allies. Republicans are now scrambling to fill that vacancy with a goal of electing a new Speaker this week.

As for who may fill the void, former President Donald Trump endorsed Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) for the role. He’s currently up against House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.).

The House will hold a candidate forum on Tuesday and plans to hold an internal election on Wednesday. One of the candidates will need to secure 217 votes.

House Foreign Affairs Chairman Michael McCaul (R-Texas) expects the first thing the new Speaker will do is to consider a bipartisan resolution affirming U.S. support for Israel.
