In a major win for the GOP, Republican Jeff Landry is poised to become the next governor of Louisiana after Saturday’s election. He’ll be replacing Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards, who has hit the eight-year term limit.

Landry won 52% of the vote in Louisiana’s so-called jungle primary. It’s a process where all candidates appear on the same ballot regardless of their party affiliation. By winning more than 50%, Landry eliminated the need for a runoff election.

“Today’s election says that our state is united,” Landry said during his victory speech Saturday night. “It’s a wake-up call and it’s a message that everyone should hear loud and clear, that we the people in this state are going to expect more out of our government from here on out.”

Landry has served as Louisiana’s attorney general since 2016. He’s championed a number of conservative policies including the state’s ban on childhood transgender treatments along with the state’s near-total ban on abortion.

Landry also enjoyed the endorsement of former President Donald Trump, who won Louisiana in convincing fashion in each of the last two general elections.

“Big win in Louisiana last night,” Trump posted in all-caps on Truth Social Sunday. “A Republican replaces a Democrat governor. Nice!”

In a different Truth Social post, Trump wrote, “A very big vote in the great state of Louisiana for A.G. Jeff Landry, who will now become the governor. despite many people running, Jeff was easily able to get a majority, meaning that there will be no runoff. This is an amazing victory for a man who will be a truly great governor. Congratulations to all!”
