Just over a week after eight Republicans joined all Democrats to strip Kevin McCarthy of the gavel, the House Republican conference is nominating Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) as the next House Speaker.

Scalise defeated Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) in a closed-door vote, which came in at 113-99 in Scalise’s favor.

It remains an open question if Scalise will be able to rally the 217 votes needed to secure the position. In fact, Ohio Rep. Max Miller is publicly saying he will not support Scalise and that he still plans to support Jordan on the floor.

It’s a possible sign we’re in for another long fight over the speakership. In January, it took 15 votes before McCarthy was finally selected.
