There was a quiet but big win for conservatives in the sports world this week when the National Hockey League banned pride-themed tape on hockey sticks.
In a memo, the NHL clarified an earlier decision to block rainbow warmup jerseys and effectively ended the other ways activist players can show support for the LGBT community on the ice.
The front office called the special gear a distraction from the game. They also wrote that players “shall not be put in the position of having to demonstrate … personal support for any Special Initiatives.”
That’s a huge reversal of policies from last season when every hockey team wore Pride jerseys.
The NHL made these decisions despite pushback from activists and even some of its biggest stars, showing a growing resistance to anything Pride-related.
