After 22 days, the House of Representatives finally has a speaker.
House Republicans today officially elected conference Vice Chair Mike Johnson (R-La.) to be the chamber’s new leader. He was tapped as the party’s fourth nominee after Tom Emmer of Minnesota dropped from the race mere hours after being picked by the conference.
The final tally came in at 220 for Johnson and 209 for minority leader Hakeem Jeffries. Upon first announcing his candidacy over the weekend, Johnson said his goal as speaker would be to “restore trust” and “advance a comprehensive policy agenda.”
