Robert Card, the gunman responsible for the deadliest mass shooting this year, was found dead on Friday. Maine Police Commissioner Mike Sauschuck made the announcement later that night.
Police confirmed the recycling center where Card had previously worked had been searched and cleared multiple times, but the owner tipped them off to additional trailers in an overflow parking lot. The 40-year-old’s body was found in the back of one of the previously unsearched tractor-trailers.
This comes as new information reveals that the US Army reservist had been admitted to a mental facility in July of this year after acting erratically and “hearing voices.” Local authorities were also on high alert in mid-September after he made threats against his base and fellow soldiers.
The death is being declared a suicide, as in addition to the self-inflicted gunshot wound, Card also wrote a note to his son beforehand, giving him information about his phone passwords and bank account information.
