After two failed votes, House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan is suspending his bid for Speaker.
He’s now backing a plan to have Speaker pro-tempore Patrick McHenry fill the role on a temporary basis until January. The plan could gain the backing of some Democrats and allow Congress to get back to work for the time being.
President Joe Biden is expected to ask Congress this week for up to $60 billion in Ukraine aid, along with $10 billion for Israel, and funding to avoid a government shutdown next month.
It remains unclear if Jordan is dropping his bid for speaker or buying more time to build support.
