The third time was not the charm for Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) in his ongoing bid to become Speaker. He again failed to get the 217 votes necessary for him to take up the gavel.

In fact, Jordan did worse on the third vote than he did in the previous two, with 25 Republicans voting against him. That’s despite a ringing endorsement from former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.).

Following Frida’s vote, McCarthy said Republicans were in a terrible place and blamed Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz for putting them in this position. For his part, Gaetz says he and the other Republicans who moved to oust McCarthy are willing to be removed from the conference entirely if it means Jordan becomes Speaker.

Despite the latest loss, Jordan isn’t backing down, telling reporters he has no plans to drop at this time. Friday’s vote came after Republicans ditched a plan to expand the powers of interim speaker Patrick McHenry.
