A Chinese fighter jet came a little too close to a U.S. bomber earlier this week, according to the U.S. military.

The U.S. Indo-Pacific Command says the planes came within 10 feet of each other on Tuesday night over the South Sea. They say the Chinese pilot used excessive speed in an unprofessional intercept of the U.S. B-52, which was made worse by the low visibility.

There have been more than 180 similar interactions between Chinese pilots and other nations since the fall of 2021. There have also been similar incidents at sea.

The announcement came as Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with China’s top diplomat Wang Yi yesterday.

Blinken aims to reopen military communications with China, something Beijing has been unwilling to do. Wang also met with National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan yesterday and will see President Joe Biden briefly tomorrow.
