Wednesday, President Joe Biden announced a proposed Federal Trade Commission rule that would ban hidden junk fees.
Those fees currently inflate the prices of concert tickets, hotel rooms, and utility bills. The removal of these fees is one of his priorities.
White House research says the fees can add as much as 20% to the total price. The FTC also estimates that consumers waste 50 million hours each year searching for the real total.
However, the proposal is receiving pushback from some business groups who believe it will lead to less competition and higher prices overall. Specifically, they fear that apartment rent prices will go up.
Conservative political pundits also panned Biden’s announcement at a time when his administration has thus far failed to create an evacuation plan for Americans trapped in Israel. As of this writing, more than 20 Americans have died.
Trending Politics co-owner Collin Rugg contrasted the president’s statement to the actions of Republican Rep. Cory Mills (R-Fla.) The congressman is currently in Israel where he has helped 32 Americans evacuate.
