The number of confirmed American deaths in Israel has risen to 25. Secretary of State Antony Blinken gave the updated number after arriving in Israel Thursday morning.

At the same time, the United States is still trying to determine how many Americans were taken hostage by Hamas. Speaking to a gathering of Jewish community leaders Wednesday, President Joe Biden said he’s working hard to secure the hostages’ freedom.

At least 17 Americans are still missing, but it’s unclear if that many were taken hostage. Pentagon spokesman John Kirby says the number of American hostages is likely small, but che aknowledges that could change over time.
