A 6.3 earthquake killed at least 2,000 people in western Afghanistan on Saturday, with many more trapped under collapsed houses.

A Taliban government official reported on Sunday that 1,000 people were injured and 1,300 homes were destroyed near the densely populated area of Herat. If the numbers are true, the event could mark the deadliest earthquake the country has experienced in two decades.

Sadly, a lack of food, clean water, and shelter is increasing the health risks in the community, while a lack of medical infrastructure is leading to more deaths.

In response, the U.N. humanitarian sector has approved a $5 million emergency fund to help the country, while organizations, such as Doctors without Borders and UNICEF, are also mobilizing on the ground.
