Most of the states that comprise the U.S. are now suing Meta on the grounds that the company’s social media products harm children’s mental health.

The AP reports that 41 states, including California and New York, are suing the tech giant for knowingly and deliberately designing features on Instagram and Facebook that lead to social media addiction for minors.

One lawsuit was filed by 33 states in California, claiming that Meta has been collecting information on users younger than 13 without their parents’ consent and in violation of federal law. Another lawsuit involving nine states and Washington, D.C., has made similar accusations against Meta.

Both lawsuits seek to end Meta’s unethical practices that go against the law and to collect financial damages and restitution.
