The UN has released shocking data revealing the U.S.-Mexico border as the world’s deadliest land migration route, one upon which hundreds have lost their lives.
The International Organization for Migration says in 2022 alone a startling 686 people died or disappeared while making the journey to the U.S. southern border. The actual number is likely higher due missing data. US border officials say migrants often die from heat stroke in the desert’s summer heat, and hypothermia in winter.
To put all this in perspective, the number of deaths and disappearances along the border represents nearly half of the over 1,400 cases recorded throughout the Americas last year.
