The battle over Alabama’s congressional maps appears to be coming to an end, with the U.S. Supreme Court declining to reconsider the issue.

State Republicans were hoping the top court would block the appointment of a special master to rezone the districts. But the justices said Tuesday they weren’t rehearing the case.

They struck down a 2021 congressional map back in June after agreeing with a lower court that it illegally underrepresented black voters. Black voters represent 27% of Alabama’s population, but could only win one of the state’s seven districts.

The next month, a lower court found that a new map submitted by lawmakers wasn’t significantly different. They ordered a special master to draw new boundaries instead and the Supreme Court’s decision effectively greenlights that process.
