Republicans are defending the launch of their impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden amid accusations that it’s politically motivated.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.)  launched the inquiry on the basis Biden lied to the American people about his connections to his son’s foreign business dealings.

But Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and White House Spokesman Ian Sams are speaking out against the inquiry saying there’s no evidence of wrongdoing by the president.

This accusation of a lack of evidence came to a head Tuesday during an exchange between a reporter and Pennsylvania Congressman Scott Perry.

Other critics are attacking McCarthy for reversing his previous position that launching an inquiry would require a full House vote. But the speaker argues that Nancy Pelosi set the precedent by skipping the vote with former President Donald Trump’s impeachments.

McCarthy says the inquiry is the next “logical next step” in the House panel’s investigation.
