As the clock ticks down, it seems highly unlikely Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) will be able to pass all 12 appropriation bills necessary to avoid a government shutdown. This leaves him with only one other option: a short-term spending measure known as a continuing resolution.
Unfortunately for the speaker, party hardliners on the right say they are prepared to strike down any stopgap funding, even one meant to grant Congress another 30 days to continue negotiations.
Florida Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz appeared on Fox News Sunday to explain his opposition to a continuing resolution. But not all conservatives think Gaetz has the right idea.
House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) says a stopgap bill is necessary to keep up the investigation into Joe Biden functioning and that a short-term funding bill could work as leverage for border policy.
