In a surprising revelation, the death toll from the Maui wildfires has dropped from 115 to 97 after the Defense Department stepped in and assessed the damage. Hawaii Gov. Josh Green made the announcement.

The number was at 115 for weeks until the announcement on Friday. The number of missing people also fell over the last month,  going from more than 1,000 down to 31.  Green referred to the remaining missing persons as being listed on “open reports.”

The county is still working to provide long-term housing for the more than 7,000 people who lost their homes.

Meanwhile, Hurricane Lee has claimed at least two lives since it made landfall in New England over the weekend and sent dangerous riptides all along the Atlantic Coast.

The post-tropical cyclone, which carried with it winds of up to 90 miles per hour, wiped out power for nearly 300,000 customers across both the US and Canada. The storm is slowing but still moving northward, meaning our neighbors to the north could still be feeling its effects for days to come.
